5 Gentle Face Cleansers, Compared

A cleanser that leaves skin feeling tight isn’t doing you a favour — our minimal routine piece goes into why. Here’s five marketed as “gentle,” and what that claim actually looks like formula to formula.

The five

  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser For Normal, Dry Skin — ₹418 (MRP ₹459). The most-reviewed product across every category on this site (430,000+ ratings) — a genuinely long track record, not a new formula riding a trend.
  • Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facewash — ₹559 (MRP ₹699). Second most-reviewed here; “kind to skin” is the brand’s whole positioning, not a one-off product claim.
  • Dot & Key Barrier Repair + Hydrating Gentle Face Wash — ₹214 (MRP ₹249). Cheapest of the five, explicitly framed around barrier repair rather than just cleansing.
  • The Derma Co 2% Niacinamide Gentle Skin Cleanser — ₹269 (MRP ₹299). The only one of the five with an active ingredient (niacinamide) built into the cleanser itself, rather than being a plain cleanser.
  • Mamaearth Beetroot Gentle Face Wash — ₹257 (MRP ₹285). Fewest reviews of the five (under 2,000) — worth knowing before assuming it’s as proven as the others.

Cetaphil and Simple have the longest, largest review histories here, which is worth something for a product you’re going to use twice a day regardless of what’s on the label. The other three each add something specific — barrier repair, an active ingredient, or a particular brand positioning — that may or may not be what you’re actually looking for in a cleanser.
